Cannibals on Parade

Brilliance from Leah at Corrente, on the absolute ghoulishness of the Bush Faction goons who want to feast on the corpses of the Gulf Coast victims to fatten their own pocketbooks and advance their radical, rapacious agenda. Read it, and be sure to follow the links which highlight one of the most emblematic elements of this cannibals’ rout: the attempt by ludicrous Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions (right — very right) to find dead rich white people killed by the storm. Why? In order to advance the

Broken Light: Work, for the Night is Coming

(Below is an excerpt from the book, Empire Burlesque. It might help explain a little bit of the ethos behind this blog, for anyone that’s interested.)

Black milk of daybreak, we drink it at evening.
— Paul Celan, “Deathfugue”

The children were walking to school. The young people were going out to a dance.
The children stepped on a booby trap planted by a soldier. The young
people were shredded by the nails of a suicide bomb. They were

War! What is it good for? Never-ending profits!

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again and we’ll
keep on saying it because it is the indisputable, undeniable truth:
Bush and his faction waged war on Iraq for money. That’s it. That’s all
there is to it. Yes, they wanted leverage over the oil. Yes, they had
(and have) grand geopolitical designs that “required” the invasion.
Yes, they had blinkered ideologues willing to use the blood and guts of
100,000 innocent people as raw material for their lunatic experiments.
But behind all of this is the unbridled lust for ill-gotten, unearned
loot — loot on an

Good Will Hunting…

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were way ahead of their time when they wrote this in 1997 for the Good Will Hunting script. Reading it again after recently watching the movie is interesting… and I am reminded of what talents these guys possessed as young lads on their first movie. Prophetic scene really. Say I’m working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. So I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I’m real happy with myself, ’cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the

Frank Rich’s Blistering Column in NYT

Wow… the face of the oligarchy speaks out. Rich lays out the most blistering attack on Bush yet in the MSM – in the NYT’s at that. Normally this is Krugman’s turf but he doesn’t even hit this hard. It’s nice to see some Floydesque stylage’ in the press. Here are some snippets from the paper… enjoy it while it lasts because in two weeks the NYT columns will $cost$. The worst storm in our history proved perfect for exposing this president because in one big blast it illuminated all his failings: the rampant cronyism, the empty sloganeering of “compassionate

Looking for a Corpse to Make a Case

Absolutely disgusting. They are shameless. There’s nothing more to add. Looking for a Corpse to Make a Case Senators look for a wealthy casualty of Katrina as evidence against the estate taxBy MASSIMO CALABRESI Federal troops aren’t the only ones looking for bodies on the Gulf Coast. On Sept. 9, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions called his old law professor Harold Apolinsky, co-author of Sessions’ legislation repealing the federal estate tax, which was encountering sudden resistance on the Hill. Sessions had an idea to revitalize their cause, which he left on Apolinsky’s voice mail: “ Jon Kyl and I were talking

Harpers… an old favourite.

I grew up with Harpers. Well-thumbed editions were stacked high in the bathroom when I was growing up – I guess it was dad’s attempt to feel more urban than was possibly possible out on the fringe of a logging city like Vancouver.  The mag grew on me. I was more than pleased to see that public pressure pushed Lewis Lapham to share more of the magazine online recently and revel in the expanded content now available. Harper’s is available online at http://www.harpers.org/ The Harper’s Index has always been a favourite. Here is last month’s. Harper’s Index Number of new U.S. soldiers the

Police chief- Lockerbie evidence was faked

This is strange. Who really blew up the plane then? And why is the CIA planting evidence? Was it the Iranians? Or a Palestinian group? Libya was targeted – and bombed for it… but it’s starting to unravel now. Background here… Click for history Police chief- Lockerbie evidence was fakedMARCELLO MEGA A FORMER Scottish police chief has given lawyers a signed statement claiming that key evidence in the Lockerbie bombing trial was fabricated. The retired officer – of assistant chief constable rank or higher – has testified that the CIA planted the tiny fragment of circuit board crucial in convicting

Enabling Act: Bush Cashes his Blank Check for Tyranny

This is an expanded version of the column published Friday, 16 September in The Moscow Times. The Times version contains extensive annotations and sources.

Four years ago, America was hit by a terrorist attack. Three days later, Congress signed away the people’s freedom, writing a blank check for tyranny to a ludicrous little man who had taken power after losing the popular vote in the most dubious election in American history. Last week, the poisonous after-effects of this abject surrender took yet another sinister turn, as Bush factotums in the courts once again upheld the
