Look Back in Panic: Tyranny in Seed and Full Flower

Wise man Robert Parry and his kindred crew at Consortiumnews.com continue to do yeoman service in detailing the most important — and most overlooked — story of our time: George W. Bush’s seizure of dictatorial power. Two current articles, by Robert and Nat Parry, lay out the situation with grim clarity: Bush’s Mysterious ‘New Programs’, by Nat, and Robert’s An Upside-Down Media. Do yourself a favor — no, do your duty as a citizen (of the United States or the world), and read them in full.

I’ve been clanging this same bell

Deep Cover: Hidey Holes for the American Elite

Orginally published in The Moscow Times on March 26, 2004.

“I have a strategy. You’re not in it.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Unfortunately for the rest of us, the insatiable Slayers in the White
House and Pentagon fully share Miss Summers’ stern credo. In fact, for
more than 20 years, men named Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld have been
working hard – and spending billions of public dollars – on secret
strategies to ensure their personal survival when the hellmouth of
catastrophe swallows everyone else.

But do let’s be fair. The yellow-feathered Washington warriors aren’t
only looking

Twisted Firestarter

This is an expanded version of the column published in the Feb. 17 edition of The Moscow Times.

The kindling has been piled high, stuffed with tinder and doused with
gasoline. The match has been lit. All it will take is the slightest
flick of the wrist to set off the conflagration. We are now living in
the interval, the few heartbeats left before the great flame ignites.

The heap of kindling has been a long time building, but in recent
weeks, the work has intensified to a fever pitch. With relentless
urgency, the American people are being habituated

Shot in the Dark: The Deeper Murk Behind Cheney’s Gunplay

What Cheney’s blast revealed: A new White House lobbying scandal
Some important digging by Will Bunch at Attywood on the scandal behind the scandal of Shotgun Dick’s shooting spree: the intimate White House connection of a swanky lobbyist with access that Jack Abramoff could only dream of. Below are some excerpts, but do read the whole piece.

Her name is Katharine Armstrong — whose family owns the Texas ranch where Cheney shot his 78-year-old friend, Harry Whittington, on Saturday. What has received virtually no attention in all the shooting hoopla is that the wealthy ranch

The Backstabbers

Here’s yet another story that is sadly characteristic of the Bush Imperium: the complete and utter breakdown in backbone of the so-called “opposition” party. We’ll skip the polite headline use by the New York Times and title the story according to its truth: Democratic Leaders Force Democrat Who Actually Talks Like a Democrat to Quit Race Due to Lack of Deference and Decorum Toward the Dear Leader and Insufficient Sucking Up to Corporate Elites.

Words are simply inadequate to describe these sad sacks of shinola, or limn the monstrous betrayal of the Republic they have

Oil and Water: Life in the Bush Imperium

Two stories, same front page of the New York Times, that tell you just about all you need to know about the priorities of American society under the Bush Imperium:

Hotel Aid Ends; Katrina Evacuees Seek Housing Again

From the oil story: The federal government is on the verge of one of the biggest giveaways of oil and gas in American history, worth an estimated $7 billion over five years.

New projections, buried in the Interior Department’s just-published budget plan,

The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight

From the “You Can’t Make It Up” Department: Cheney Accidentally Shoots Fellow Hunter. From AP: Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday. Harry Whittington, 78, was “alert and doing fine” after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong. Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken

Storm Warning: Levee Lies and the War on Reality

White House Knew of Levee’s Failure on Night of Storm
From the NYT: [Excerpt]: In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Bush administration officials said they had been caught by surprise when they were told on Tuesday, Aug. 30, that a levee had broken, allowing floodwaters to engulf New Orleans.

“But Congressional investigators have now learned that an eyewitness account of the flooding from a federal emergency official reached the Homeland Security Department’s headquarters starting at 9:27 p.m. the day before, and the White
