Home Front: Dispatches from the War on America

While your attention has been diverted by the proxy war in Lebanon, the civil war in Iraq, the still-hot shootin’ war in Afghanistan and the coming war with Iran, the Bush Regime been busy waging — and winning — another take-no-prisoners, give-no-quarter conflict right in the sacred Homeland itself: class war.

I know, I know: we don’t have "classes" in America. No, our society is flatter than a flitter; we’re all born

The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned

In the oceans of newsprint and tsunamis of pixels expended on the London bomb plot stories over the last two days, I don’t recall seeing — anywhere, either in the US or UK media — that one little word which differentiates honest journalism from the noxious regurgitations of state propaganda: “alleged.”

Everywhere, you read that a “bomb plot

Restless Farewell: Last Call for the Global Eye

Below is my last ‘Global Eye’ column, for the Aug. 11 edition of the Moscow Times, written, as it happens, during a visit to my hometown. Again, forgive the personal tenor of this entry.

Starting this week, I will be writing a regular column for Truthout.org.

WATERTOWN, Tennessee — Our revels now are ended. This is my last column for The Moscow Times.

It seems somehow appropriate, if entirely accidental, that I should

The Goons of August: Bushists Blather While Lebanon Burns

Juan Cole delivers a masterful essay eviscerating the hideous moral perversions of Bush and all the apologists for the ongoing destruction of Lebanon: Bush, Islamic Fascism and the Christians of Jounieh. You should read the whole piece, and see the illustrations of the kind of “Islamic fascists” being killed and despoiled with American weaponry even as we speak, but here are some brief excerpts:

Bush is on vacation, his favorite place to be during a major crisis. The August retreat is the only<img style="width: 112px; height: 161px;" src="https://www.quizzical-kowalevski.136-144-180-92.plesk.page/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/Bush-gooberizing_1.jpg" align="right" border="1"

The Fifty-Percent Solution: Catastrophe by the Numbers

Two telling stories came over the transom this week – seemingly unrelated, except tangentially, as both deal with different aspects of the fiasco in Iraq. Yet together they provide an illuminating glimpse – like a discarded corpse revealed by a lightning flash – of the moral horror that George W. Bush and his sycophants have wrought both in Iraq and the United States.

First, from the Catholic News Service: “Half of All Christians Have Fled Iraq Since 2003, Says Baghdad Bishop.” Excerpt:

Book Excerpt: “Errand Boy: The Revelation of St. George

Continuing with our excerpts from the latest, expanded edition of the Empire Burlesque book, here is an apropos morsel from June 2003, as George W. Bush — flush with what he believes to be "triumph" in Iraq — turns his hand to solving the Middle East crisis with the backing of his closest adviser: God.

CYA Agents: Bush Hit Men Running Scared

Like a gang of twitchy hit men afraid they’ve botched the job, the Bush Regime is creeping back to the scene of the crime: the Congressional backrooms where they thought they’d put the kibosh on the American Republic once and for all.

But it seems there is still a flicker of life in the victim — and thus a threat that the gangsters might have to face the music somewhere down the line. So they went back to the bagmen on Capitol Hill this week, ordering their minions to provide retroactive legal cover for the rank offenses committed

Chris Floyd Sacked from Moscow Times – After Ten Years

by Richard KasteleinWebmaster/PublisherEmpire Burlesque This is a personal message from me. Chris can speak for himself, and I’m sure he will when the time is right, but I just wanted to let everyone know that today, after more than a decade of working with The Moscow Times, Chris Floyd was ‘let go’ by the new editor, who said Floyd’s column no longer fits in with the paper’s plans. So that’s it. After 10 years of the "Global Eye" column, and 12 years overall with the paper, it’s over. After August 11, Floyd will no longer be published in the Moscow
