Democrats to back down on Iraq war conditions (Reuters)

My god, could mind of man ever conceive of such a thing? Democrats? Caving in? On Iraq? Have we fallen into some kind of alternative universe? Nancy and Steny and Harry throwing in the towel, giving Bush everything he wants to keep the war booty flowing to his cronies? Who dast suggest such a base calumny of our courageous tribunes? Could it really be true?

Why, such a contemptuous rejection of the voters' clearly expressed will would imply the total collapse of our political system, its final degeneration into nothing but a mere pass-through mechanism for funneling public money to corporate behemoths and war profiteers! And everybody knows that can't happen to the nation that is God's bestest little sunbeam on earth!

Well, at least we can rest easy, knowing that Barack Obama will lead the charge against this shameful capitulation when it gets to the Senate. As he has done so often before, he will certainly use the power of his office, the vast resources of his political machine and his immense popularity to bring this issue to the forefront of the national consciousness, employing all of his storied eloquence -- even filibustering for days on end, if need be -- to cast down this bill and place binding conditions for a complete and orderly withdrawal from Iraq on any funding measure that goes forward, and defying Bush to veto it: "Let the line be drawn, let it be drawn now, let it be drawn here!"

That will happen, right?

Democrats in the Congress, who came to power last year on a call to end the combat in Iraq, will soon give President George W. Bush the last war-funding bill of his presidency without any of the conditions they sought for withdrawing U.S. troops, congressional aides said on Monday.

Lawmakers are arranging to send Bush $165 billion in new money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, enough to last for about a year and well beyond when Bush leaves office on January 20...

With this bill, Congress will have written checks for more than $800 billion to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with most of the money going to Iraq.
