As a lawyer, he decided that the best possible defence for his crimes would be to convert to catholicism. One of the integral parts of this religion is the confession, where sinners (criminals) can offload their sins (crimes) and get a clean slate so they can sleep at night. If they sin (commit crimes) again, all they have to do is confess to get their forgiveness and start all over again with a clean slate.
