| Terrorism Defined: Bill Clinton Lights Our Way to Truth |

For years, the all-consuming international struggle against the scourge of terrorism has been hampered at times by the fact that no one has been able to provide us with a rock-solid, comprehensive definition of the term. What, exactly, is "terrorism?" Great minds have grappled with this question in learned journals, academic symposia, think-tank fora, government entmoots, and across the commanding heights of the media. The matter is of some moment, as any person or organization to whom this ill-defined label is applied automatically becomes a target for "the path of action," to borrow the stirring phraseology of former U.S. president George W. Bush. Terror mean[s] killing and robbery and coercion by people who do not have state authority and go beyond national borders.
In any case, and every case, if this border-transcending activity is done by people who have state authority, then it is legitimate, it is good, it is necessary, it is noble. And even if, sometimes, on rare occasions, mistakes are made during the killing, robbing and coercing done by people who have state authority, these mistakes are only ever the result of good intentions gone awry.

Check last sentence "now surround the gird the current administration". Gird works for me. Great post Chris - there's too much truth in Narcissist Bill's probably accidental formulation for anyone in power to want that interview publicized. I love to hear Clinton praising Friedman - praise from an asshole that so accurately condemns the praisee. |

... Bill Clinton said: "Terror mean[s] killing and robbery and coercion by people who do not have state authority and go beyond national borders." Tom Friedman wrote (regarding the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon): "Israel’s counterstrategy was to use its Air Force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical. Israel basically said that when dealing with a nonstate actor, Hezbollah, nested among civilians, the only long-term source of deterrence was to exact enough pain on the civilians — the families and employers of the militants — to restrain Hezbollah in the future." Two peas in a pod. |

Clinton is probably right -- Clinton is probably right about Friedman. I'm told Bubba is a connoisseur of fellatio, and I believe it's true. I mean Monica clearly had hidden talents. Can't imagine what they were. . . . |

Yep little tommys a genius, how else can he come with those stories about the common people of the earth from his $10,000 night suite is beyond me. I’m sure the elite of the nation are telling him everything he needs to know over dinner being served by servants. |

Irony aside: That's what the establishment believes! Clinton was just making explicit the way these things are perceived in the West. He was just stating what Western elites see as obvious. To quote the political theorist Sheldon Wolin: "While Superpower retained its basis in the state and could thereby claim legitimacy for its use of violence, terrorism became associated with “pure” violence, violence purified by faith." (Politics and Vision, p. 560) Wolin is highly critical of the political form that the United States has assumed, by the way, calling it "inverted totalitarianism". In my view, he gives the best academic analysis of the things you write about, Chris. Unsurprisingly, despite his being a respected, non-radical Princeton professor emeritus, the new edition of this book, as well of his last book, Democracy Incorporated, have been completely ignored, even by left-liberal publications such as the New York Review of Books. |
