| Happy Junta Grounds: Militarist Machiavellis Maneuver for More War |

These days, the always noxious air of the Beltway is astir with the machinations of the military junta that now dominates the gutted and looted ruins of the American republic. Two recent articles provide excellent guides to the brazen Pentagon squeeze play to ensure that the civilian government does not stray from the militarist agenda of more war, all the time, everywhere, always -- a condition best captured in the marvelous title of the latest volume of Christopher Logue's serial reworking of The Illiad: All-Day Permanent Red. Over the nearly six decades that separate us from Truman’s great moment [firing the overreaching General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War], the Pentagon has become a far more overwhelming institution. In Afghanistan, as in Washington, it has swallowed up much of what once was intelligence, as it is swallowing up much of what once was diplomacy. It is linked to one of the two businesses, the Pentagon-subsidized weapons industry, which has proven an American success story even in the worst of economic times (the other remains Hollywood). It now holds a far different position in a society that seems to feed on war.
The long war mafia made clear its opposition to candidate Obama’s campaign promise to establish a timeline to draw down the Iraq war. Even after Obama had assumed office, Odierno, commander in Iraq, stated publicly (through Petraeus’s hagiographer Tom Ricks) that he expected to keep 30,000 more troops in Iraq through 2014 or 2015, well after the December 2011 exit deadline called for in the Status of Forces Agreement.
McChrystal’s report is incoherent on the subject of strategy. It says, "We must conduct classic counterinsurgency operations" and states that success depends not on "seizing terrain or destroying insurgent forces" but on "gaining the support of the people." That’s laughable in light of the fact that classic clear-hold-build counterinsurgency operations involve seizing terrain and destroying the insurgent forces that occupy it.
The monopoly on use of nuclear weaponry, the cult of the commander in chief, the worldwide network of military bases to maintain nuclear alert and supremacy, the secret intelligence agencies, the entire national security state, the classification and clearance systems, the expansion of state secrets, the withholding of evidence and information, the permanent emergency that has melded World War II with the cold war and the cold war with the "war on terror"—all these make a vast and intricate structure that may not yield to effort at dismantling it. Sixty-eight straight years of war emergency powers (1941–2009) have made the abnormal normal, and constitutional diminishment the settled order....
Pakistanis, who are extremely sensitive about national sovereignty, oppose allowing foreign troops on their soil and have protested U.S. missile attacks launched from unmanned aircraft against suspected Taliban and al-Qaeda targets inside Pakistan.
"We recognize that Pakistani public opinion on the United States is still surprisingly low, given the tremendous effort by the United States to lead an international coalition in support of Pakistan," Richard C. Holbrooke.

A full tank of gas and a clean windshield. The machine has been locked in place at least since WWII, the fine tuning has taken a bit of tinkering,(getting rid of those pesky bleeding hearts opposed to a continuous state of war, for one). As an example, the atomic bombs used on Japan were debated and many theories suggested for why it was used, (Avoid invasion, scare the Soviets, etc.). The real reason was that the U.S. had bought and now it was time to use it. No sense spending billions on a gadget that is not given a "new car" run. Now the machine itself directs policy, the geniuses at State, the Pentagon and the Congress have shown, again and again that they defer to this apparatus and will continue to do so. Thanks for another clear sighted article about the leadership of this benighted state. |

They scariest thing is that "they" believe their own bs The elite have drifted so far from reality that they don't realize that they can only "create their own reality" but so much. Then the "real reality" comes to the fore and blowback occurs. Based on the deeds of the psychos in charge, the blowback -- when it finally arrives -- will be on a level unprecedented in history. Most of the sheeple have no idea that their little paradise was built on a foundation of sand. The misdeeds of the rulers will be visited upon their subjects, and no matter how horrible it is, it will be justified. |

bombs away Of course, we have all seen the gauntlet thrown down to Iran, this morning, in New York. The Empire has - at this outing - the French onboard up front; the Russian quiescent. War is only months away, now. Unless the people spontaneously awaken to oppose this Imperial nonsense, hell is going to break out, very soon. I really no longer care for my fellow countrymen. Let them reap what they have sown. Scott So. Why did you want O'bomba over McCain? |

The Next Big One.... Just wait till the Israel/US vs. Iran debacle gets going. Betrayus is likely salivating at that prospect, already, since it's the Navy, which has half of its surface fleet parked in the Gulf, that will get hammered, initially. I noticed, with great interest, that the old War Criminal and Russia-phobe, Zbigniew Brzezinski, was suggesting this week that if the Israeli air force attempts to over-fly Iraq, when it attacks Iran, that the U.S. should shoot them down. He modified that comment to 'They should be dissuaded from attempting to launch an attack'. Zbig' knows full well that the Iranians will close the Gulf, driving oil to USD 300 + a barrel, trashing what's left of the U.S. economy and reducing the U.S. army to pushing its M1's and Bradleys into battle, while the air force uses FEDEX to deliver it's missiles and bombs on target. In truth, I think it's more likely the fact that Russia will make out like a bandit with oil prices that high that is influencing Brzezinski's thinking. Since he has Obama's ear - or had, prior to his becoming President - there remains some hope that things will not get even worse for the disenfranchised citizens of America. Though, I'm afraid it is only a faint hope. |

They're already prepping the murder -- See all those gun-toting loons in the tea-bag movement? I'll be anybody here $500 that if Obama gets shot, authorities will link the lone nut gunman to the tea-bag movement. They'll have film footage of him stalking around a rally someplace with his handgun prominently displayed. Then there'll be a big national angst about talk-radio hate merchants and should we muzzle Glenn and Rush. Hide and watch, I tell ya! If Obama gets his, that's where they'll lay the blame. |

... The 1,397 teabaggers around America are not a threat to anyone except Jon Stewart's joke-writers. I'm a little more concerned about the 535 members of the Congress and their lobbyist pals from entities like AIPAC, General Dynamics, Raytheon. Those selfish fockwits threaten my personal security and pleasurable existence more than any teabagger. If there's a real threat from teabaggers, it's that we'll have to endure more teabagger putdowns from Jon Stewart and the other libtardfock "comedians" who will do anything to distract us from the criminal Congresscritters and the mafioso himself, Don Obama. |

America's disease is terminal... the only thing left is to decide upon an epitaph. Chris, superb writing and analysis that is spot on! |

Unstoppable Force, Meet Immovable Object Probably the best summary of the military-industrial complex and its relentless march towards more war at any cost that I've seen Chris write. He has a consistent knack for cutting through the bullshit we reflexively accept from the mainstream media and pointing out the deeper truth - in this case, that the Pentagon and the national security state has become so powerful that it is akin to a military junta exercising ultimate power over the supposed "civilian" government. Reversing this institutional inertia will not be easy. |

JFK LOLZ What Democratic president would not want to be the next Kennedy? Obama should go for it -- quit while he's ahead in a savage blaze of glory -- and preferably before his healthcare bill goes to hell. (He would not want to be remembered for that pile of garbage.) |

No Epitaph... ... Not yet. Not before millions more die, not before we at last provoke that necessary war against the Islamofascist evildoers of Iran, not before we expand our holy efforts in Afghanistan and of course not until we launch a real blitzkrieg upon those Satanic terrorists embedded in Pakistan. Keep the Homeland safe! As the decrepit national infrastructure continues to crumble, as tens of thousands die for lack of a civilized national health care plan, we will valiantly continue to funnel the people's treasure where it will do the most good, into the pockets of the war profiteers and banking Mafiosi. No epitaphs, just a flickering, buzzing neon sign anchored above the Statue Of Liberty's torch that proclaims, "Hello Suckers! Abandon All Hope Ye Who Are Trapped Here". |

... We throw good money at these gooks, and they still don't like us to invade their country and kill their people! Really! What does an empire have to do to get a little love around here? "What does an empire have to do?" Answer: Repent, and go away, and bring your leaders to trial, and hold them accountable for their war crimes and torturing.. Message to the USA, its leaders, and its people: "It is unthinkable in the 20th century to fail to distinguish between what constitutes an abominable atrocity that must be prosecuted and what constitutes that 'past' which 'ought not to be stirred up'. We have to condemn publicly the very idea that some people have the right to repress others. In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousandfold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations. I t is for this reason, and not because of the 'weakness of indoctrinational work', that they are growing up 'indifferent'. Young people are acquiring the conviction that foul deeds are never punished on earth, that they always bring prosperity. It is going to be uncomfortable, horrible, to live in such a country!" --- Alexandre Isayevich Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago. |

Your copy editor has a small correction I would have sent this to you as email, but couldn't find a way to do it. The Urban Dictionary says this about cajones: cajones Spanish for "drawers" (as in, the kind in a dresser or desk). This word is often confused by non-Spanish speakers with cojones (note the different vowel sound), which is Spanish slang for balls, but they are in fact two very different words. |

You want a second term? "...The heavily redacted document virtually screamed its warning that if" Obama didn't commit more troops, he could kiss his second term good-by. No one is going to elect a looser, especially a big looser -- or a dead one, for that matter. [No Op Northwoods, no Kennedy] |
