Halliburton Unit Gets Deal From Agency

From AP, via Buzzflash: Halliburton...said its KBR subsidiary [has] received a five-year, $385 million contract from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement department. The pact provides for establishing temporary detention, processing and deportation facilities if there is "an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S.," Halliburton said....The deal is worth a maximum of $385 million and consists of a one-year base period and four, one-year options. The contract may also include providing migrant detention support to other government organizations in an immigration emergency prompted, for example, by a natural disaster. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement is part of the Department of Homeland Security. [End excerpt]

This story immediately raises two questions: Has this contract been awarded because the Bush Faction is planning some malevolent event that will result in "an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S."? Or is it simply yet another dodge to pump yet another big dollop of taxpayer dollars into Halliburton's coffers? As in, "Gee, Dick, our book-cookers tell us we need a quick $300 mill or so to juice the bottom line and goose the share price up. Can you slip us something pronto? But make sure it's a low-profile gig -- no more Iraq stuff right now, not with all these damned audit stories around."

However, given the bloodsoaked track record and violent tendencies of this cretinous crew,  I think it would be safer to assume that the first question will get us closer to the truth. .
